Description

Ottoman Dagger with Horn Handle.

Approximately 8 1/4-inch Damascus [wootz] steel blade. Horn handle. Formed black leather wrapped scabbard with mount. Overall length of the dagger is 14-inches. A seldom seen dagger. Interesting to note, Middle Eastern blacksmiths used wootz ingots from the Indian subcontinent to produce extraordinary steel weaponry throughout the middle ages, known as Damascus steel. Similar examples can be viewed and studied in, A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor by Stone.

Condition: Fine for its age. Blade very sharp with light patches of pitting concentrating near sharp edge. Horn with some internal cracks, imperfections and some flaking. Scabbard good with fine scratches, few scuffs from storage and/or handling including minor separations. Appears to have been fitted with tip at some point, now absent.
