Description

Herbert Hoover: Anti-Smith Giant Post Card. Al Smith was the first Roman Catholic major party candidate for President. The KKK was at its peak in the 1920s and Smith's candidacy stirred up a great deal of anti-Catholic rhetoric. Some partisan created this custom-made 20" x 13" post card on thick board. It was sent Special Delivery to Otis Barton of Trenton, Missouri [USA of R, or United States of America of Rome]. There's a defaced campaign stamp for Al Smith in the corner, under a cross, inscribed "United States of Rome Postage By Edict of Pope Pius XI". The other side has various inscriptions, images and newspaper cartoons, dealing with prohibition and religion issues. It reads: "The Faithful old donkey has been Sacrificed on the alter of Democracy. Beware [Wm. Bryan, Alton B. Parker, James M. Cox, John W. Davis] Houston -- Heflin Hell & Hard Times".
