Description

Gold Rush Era Traveler's Guide with Map. Some unknown traveller heading west in 1850 may have found this travel guide handy. It was published by Ensign & Thayer of New York in 1850 and includes vital information about steamboat, stage and rail travel from key transportation hubs in the central states emanating westward. It contains a highly decorative 26" x 22" fold-out map on onionskin paper that depicts states as far west as Minnesota and Nebraska, as well as "Indian Territory". The map has some separation at the folds and a lateral tear on the left side. The cover of the 3.5" x 5.5" book is especially appealing with gold-stamped images of a primitive locomotive and steamboat.
Contrary to the photo, the map is complete. The top of the title is folded over, as made.
