Description

George Washington: Patron Saint of the Native Americans. When Washington advised Americans to "beware of foreign influences", he could not imagine the words would be used for nefarious purposes by the Native American Party of the mid-1840s and its successor, the Know Nothing Party. The Nativists were anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant, and proposed a waiting period for naturalization of twenty-one years. This lot has four Native American silk ribbons depicting Washington, as well as a Whig ribbon from 1837. Many Whigs were members of the Know Nothings. Their most prominent member, President Millard Fillmore, was himself a former Whig. Two of the ribbons display faults - the others are in excellent condition. Please refer to the photos to determine condition.
