Description

Three Civil War Era Satirical Imprints. This trio includes some rarities and is worth checking out. The first is a 9" x 5" 32-page booklet titled "Ye Book of Copperheads" published by Frederick Leypoldt of Philadelphia in 1863. It has a presentation inscription on the front cover and is full of anti-Copperhead cartoons. The second is a 16-page Grant campaign booklet published in 1868, titled "This is the House That Jeff Built". It measures 6" x 9" and is full of anti-Confederate cartoons as well as ones promoting the candidacy of Ulysses S. Grant (binding somewhat loose, minor chipping to edges). The third is a 96-page disbound booklet titled: "Fred Douglass and his Mule; A Story of the War. By Bricktop." It was published in 1873 by Collin & Small of New York and measures 5.5" x 8.5". It pokes fun at Frederick Douglass, the lead character (a Union soldier), and the role played by blacks in the Civil War. It lacks the cover and has scattered foxing, but is a rare volume.
