Description

Terrific Joe Wheeler Whiskey Tin Sign. Besides being gorgeous, this heavy gauge tin sign is huge. It measures a bountiful 39.5" x 27.5". It advertises "'Our Joe' Hand Made Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey." General Joe Wheeler appears in the top right corner. Wheeler was a Confederate General who later joined the regular army and had overall command of the 1st United States Volunteers during the Spanish American War. His subordinates included Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt. While TR is most often associated with the charge up San Juan Hill, this sign shows "Gen. Joe Wheeler at the Battle of San Juan Hill, July 2nd 1898." It was produced by Kaufmann & Strauss Company of New York. The colors are vibrant and the scene richly detailed. Aside from some minor rust spots, mainly around the edges, it is in excellent shape. It was acquired by the consignor from a Montana saloon that had been boarded up since 1940. This prime example of lithography on tin has great cross-over appeal and is a wonderful slice of Americana.
