Description

John F. Kennedy: Funeral Home Death Certificate File Copy. President Kennedy's assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963 spawned a variety of paperwork, official documents and artifacts, including homicide reports and death certificates. The Vernon O'Neal Funeral Home in Dallas provided the $4,000 bronze casket that was used to transport the President's body on the flight back to Washington, D.C. They also typed up a death certificate. Hurriedly done, it had two glaring errors. The residence of the deceased was shown as "600 Pennsylvania Avenue", not "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" and the social security number was omitted. The original of that certificate was filed with the Dallas Bureau of Vital Statistics on December 11, 1963, but the mistakes were noted and the funeral home requested to submit a revised document. The original, slated for destruction, was retained by a funeral home employee and still exists. The item we are offering appears to be a contemporary, 8" x 10.5" photostatic file copy, either retained by the funeral home around the time of the December 11th submission, or perhaps a copy retained by the Bureau of Vital Statistics. It has all the diagnostics of the original Vernon O'Neal document and gives all indications of being an official file copy of the period. It was obtained by the consignor from the discarded papers of an unknown, elderly decedent.
