Description

Ulysses S. Grant: Pictorial Coal Bin. This cast-iron and tole ware canister was likely used to store coal or ashes until they could be disposed of. The central feature is a 8" x 6.5" glass plaque on the hinged lid. Mounted beneath the plaque is an albumen photograph of U. S. Grant. The portrait is surrounded by shields and flags, in "reverse on glass" style, painted in red, white, blue, gold, magenta and green. The metal canister also has gilt highlights. It is 23" tall and 11.5" in diameter. There are three cast-iron feet, one cast-iron handle on the front and two hinged bail handles on the back side. The hinged lid opens to reveal another storage or waste canister in the interior which lifts out. This handsome Victorian accessory was likely issued circa 1865.
