Description

Grant & Colfax: Chromolithograph Jugate Poster. 14" x 18" chromolithograph print or poster titled: "The Chicago Platform, 1868." The top of the print has portraits of Grant and Colfax. The central text reprints the "Declaration of Principles" adopted at the 1868 Republican National Convention held in Chicago. There are vignettes of the Battle of Chapultepec, Shiloh, Surrender of Vicksburg, the Capitol, and the Surrender of General Lee. The dual columns are inscribed with the names of twelve Civil War battles in which Grant participated. The design elements all serve as a paean to Grant. The text is printed in red ink on a light gold background. It was printed by A. Holland of Boston and published by H. Billings. There are small tack holes in the corners from posting, some loss to the top and bottom edges and several border tears repaired with archival tape. Somewhat delicate, it will look quite handsome when framed. Unlike some of the jugate wall charts, it is just "the right size."
