Description

William Henry Harrison: Inauguration Comb. Making utilitarian objects out of tortoise shell or animal horn was quite fashionable in the 1830s and 1840s. Accordingly, it comes as no surprise that an occasional political object on this type surfaces from time to time. Someone chose to commemorate the inauguration of William Henry Harrison in this manner. This 4" square comb or hair ornament has his portrait on the top panel along with two eagles and two flags. It is inscribed "Wm. Henry Harrison President U.S.A. March 4, 1841." There are a handful of minor chips which impact minimally on the design. Considering its delicate nature, it is remarkably well-preserved.

The minor imperfections in this piece are not chips as stated, but in fact holes created by some sort of worm or insect attracted to its tortoise shell material.
