Description

Abraham Lincoln: Civil War Bandanna. Unlisted in Threads, this 32" x 32" yellow silk bandanna features a star-encircled portrait of "Abraham Lincoln Late President of the United States." Given the title, that dates it to the post-assassination period. The subject matter and design elements, however, point to an earlier date, perhaps 1862. There are vignettes of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New Orleans. There are eagles and crossed flags in each corner and portraits of twenty Union generals, Cabinet members and government officials. We have seen the same basic design with multicolors, predominantly red and blue. We suspect at least two versions were manufactured in England for export to America, one pre-assassination and one post-assassination. Given the limited number of Lincoln pictorial textiles issued during this period, any examples are both rare and desirable. This one is in excellent condition. There is a blank border at the top which was folded over and used as a hinge to affix the bandanna on a mount. The bandanna is loose and the blank hinge still folded over and in place.
