Description

Fremont & Cochrane: Back-to-Back Ferrotype Badge. DeWitt JF-1864-6, 26 mm. gilt brass shell. The candidates of the "Radical Republicans", General John Fremont and John Cochrane are shown on either side of this prohibitively rare ferrotype badge. Mates were made for Lincoln and McClellan, in two sizes. The McClellan, for reasons unknown, does not have the names of the candidates nor the star ornaments. This is the largest size and the first example we recall seeing, other than the one pictured in the DeWitt book. The Fremont portrait is in excellent condition, although the name and stars are light, as made. The Cochrane side is slightly concave with scattered nicks and scratches of a minor nature. The ticket withdrew from the race in September, thereby facilitating Lincoln's re-election bid.
