Octavo. 578 pages. Maps. The original binding has been rebacked using a portion of the original spine, and there are numerous other repairs and restoration attempts to the binding. The textblock is still quite sound and bright with a few damp stains scattered throughout. The hinges have been reinforced with tape and the preliminary pages have been reinforced with archival tape. This copy is from the library of R. E. Lee Camp, Number ! of the Confederate Veterans of Richmond, Virginia as indicated by their library ownership label on the front pastedown. Engraved portrait of General Morgan used as frontispiece.
The author, Basil Duke was himself a Confederate general and brother-in-law to General John Hunt Morgan. Morgan's sister married Confederate General A. P. Hill. Duke has inscribed the book to his sister-in-law on the flyleaf: "Mrs. A. P. Hill From her affectionate Brother Basil W. Duke". A most interesting association copy.
