Description
George Brookshaw (1751-1823). Green Melon - Plate LXIX.Aquatint engraving of a melon, with some hand-coloring, from Brookshaw's Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits (London: 1804-1812). Watermarked "1822." In very good condition with light toning. Left side shows a binding edge that has been roughly and unevenly trimmed. Chip to tip of lower right corner. A couple of pin holes to top edge. Light penciled notations. 17.75 x 22.75 inches.
More Information: George Brookshaw (1751-1823), an English artist who started his career as a cabinetmaker with royal patronage, is represented here with plates from his ground-breaking Pomona Britannica; or a Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits, originally issued in parts and then published as a complete edition in 1812. These large aquatint engravings were printed in color and finished by hand. The complete work, consisting of ninety plates, took almost a decade to complete, and it is considered by many to be the finest work on fruit ever produced. Brookshaw's specimens came largely from the royal gardens at Hampton Court and Kensington Gardens, and his intent was not only to create a great work of art, but also to produce something of a guide for gardeners in an effort to spur varietal cultivation. Dramatic, sumptuous, and painterly, Brookshaw's Pomona Britannica remains one of the greatest works of botanical illustration ever produced.
