Description
Charles Dickens. Our Mutual Friend. London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. First edition in book form, bound from the original parts, with stab-holes visible. Two octavo volumes. xi, [1, blank], 320 pages; vii, [1, list of illustrations] (with the Contents/List of Illustrations leaf bound out of sequence, right after the title page), 309, [1, printer's imprint] pages. No advertisements. Forty wood-engraved plates, including frontispieces, by the Dalziel Brothers and W. T. Green after Marcus Stone (the "Eugene's Bedside" plate in volume two being bound at page 265 instead of page 255, as called-for). Publisher's original dark reddish brown sand-grain cloth with blind-stamped decorations on the boards and decorative gilt stamping and titles to the spine. Dark green, possibly new, endpapers. Text edges sprinkled red. Light sunning to spine cloth. Moderate shelf wear to the bindings. Corners noticeably bumped. Scattered foxing throughout, but the text is mostly clean. A few creased corners near the end of volume two. Small ink ownership symbol to front blank of volume two. All in all, a very good copy. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.Auction Info
