Description
An 1868 Handwritten Check from Dickens to His Manager with a Ticket Stub from a Reading Three Days Earlier
Charles Dickens. Autograph Document Signed, "Charles Dickens", one page, 7" x 3.875", Baltimore, February 10, 1868. To George Dolby, Dickens's reading tour manager. Matted to an overall size of 10" x 12".Dickens executed this check on plain laid paper, and it reads, in full: "Baltimore U. S. / Tenth February 1868. / Messrs. Coates and Co. / Please pay to the credit of Mr. George Dolby / in account with you, Three Hundred Pounds, [line] / Charles Dickens [flourish] / £300.00." The check shows one horizontal fold and light dust-soiling, but is overall in fine condition. The cabinet card photograph and the ticket stub show minor edge wear and rubbing.
Here, Dickens pays Dolby, his trusted American reading tour manager, the sum of £300, which represented approximately 10% of the total fee for the tour. This handsome check is matted along with a cabinet card photograph of Dickens and a ticket stub for Dickens's Washington, D. C. reading of February 7, 1868 (the great author's 56th birthday), and three days before the check was written. A fascinating display piece, with a handwritten Dickens check and an actual relic from his American reading tour of 1867-1868. By themselves, ticket stubs from Dickens readings are highly-prized by collectors, so the chance to obtain one with a Dickens reading tour-related ADS is a unique opportunity. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.
