Description

With Pencilled Marginalia Notes on the Dust Jacket by Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand. We the Living. New York: Macmillan, 1936.

First edition of her first regularly published book. With her original marginal notes in pencil on the flaps of the dust jacket. Octavo. [iv], 570, [2, blank] pages.

Publisher's gray cloth, front cover and spine lettered in blue, dust jacket. Jacket quite worn and chipped, tape repair on verso, front flap is loose, yet present. Cloth is soiled and somewhat worn. Simple paper repair to rear free-endpaper. Skewed. Good.

In preparation for the 1959 reissue of this title, Rand apparently got this copy and used it to revise the text for the jacket flaps. On the front flap, she changes the description of Andre from "an ardent communist" to "a communist." She also adds "what he thought was" near the bottom. On the rear flap she adds the words "as" and "ultimate," as well as deletes an entire paragraph of her biography ("Ayn Rand, the author, is Russian..."). She also crosses out other words, and places a question mark by others. Ultimately, these corrections were not used, as the entire copy on the flaps was re-written. From the collection of Robert Hessen, who was an associate of Rand's who contributed articles to her various periodicals.
