Description
Affectionate Letter to His Copy Editor, Signed by Cormac McCarthy
[Cormac McCarthy]. Autograph Letter Signed by McCarthy to Long-Time Copy Editor Bertha ("Bert") Krantz. Postmarked 12 May, 1992, El Paso, Texas.One-page letter, folded twice, written in black felt pen. Signed "Cormac." With transmittal envelope. Fine.
An affectionate letter to Bert Krantz written in May, 1992, the month in which All the Pretty Horses was published, likely thanking her for her work on the book that propelled McCarthy into the stratosphere of literary stardom. He writes: "Thanks for your corrections. I hope you understand that they are always welcome. Copy editors are becoming about as rare as any other form of literate life and my offer still stands to have you to read the next book -- and/or any future books. I'll talk to you soon. Much love -- Cormac."
Bert Krantz was a long-time copy editor at Random House who was perhaps most famous for her no doubt grueling work on Ayn Rand's 1,100-plus-page Atlas Shrugged. She appears to have worked with McCarthy on at least two of his earlier works, Suttree and Blood Meridian. Ms. Krantz died in 2010 at the age of 84.
