Personal Letter from Ernest Hemingway to His 24-Year Old Younger Brother Leicester
Ernest Hemingway. Typed Letter Signed by Ernest Hemingway to His Brother Leicester, Acknowledging a Debt Repaid. One-page typed letter, with "Nov. 2" (no year stated, but 1939) and "Sun Valley Idaho" written at top in red pencil, in Ernest Hemingway's hand. Letter is addressed to "Baron." Signed in red pencil "Best always kid / Ernie."An original letter, reprinted in Leicester Hemingway's critically acclaimed memoir, My Brother, Ernest Hemingway (1962), concerning Ernest Hemingway's appreciative (and possibly surprised) acknowledgement of a $100 debt repaid by his somewhat profligate younger brother Leicester (whom he called "Baron"). Hemingway thanks him for the repayment and then sweetly returns the money to Leicester: "But don't ever think I didn't appreciate your sending it. And I know damned well that will get it back sometime. You're a good guy Baron."
Hemingway also writes of his work on For Whom the Bell Tolls, the accidental death of Sun Valley neighbor Gene Van Guilder that week, and the "lovely shooting" in Idaho. He also asks Leicester to look into some tax issues regarding his Emmet County, Michigan property.
This is an affectionate, informal letter, full of advice and encouragement: "[I] also admire plenty your entire conduct for some time back and have been known to brag of same." A lovely letter from a supportive older brother to an always-struggling younger brother who had yet to find his way.
In very good condition with the usual folds, some minor splitting at edges along folds, and some areas of minor discoloration. Sheet measures approximately 8.5 x 11 inches.
