Description

With the Suppressed Plate

[Wilhelm von Kaulbach]. Goethe. Reynard the Fox, After the German Version of Goethe by Thomas James Arnold, Esq. New York: Theo. Stroefer, 1870.

First American edition. Small folio. 236 pages. With thirty-seven full-page engravings behind tissue guards, including an engraved title page and the suppressed plate (9a in this edition, facing page 44).

Original full red morocco binding, with gilt lettering and decorative borders to spine and front board; blind-stamped rules and circular device to rear board. Beveled boards, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles. White silk moiré endpapers. Binding slightly cocked. Some rubbing to boards; extremities worn, particularly spine ends and corners. Circular discoloration, approximately an inch in diameter, on front cover, with a rectangular depression in center. Stray marks to rear board. Foxing to plates; text pages generally quite clean. German bookstore ticket to front pastedown. Inked ownership name, dated 1922, to a preliminary blank. A nice tight copy in very good or better condition.

In 1794 Goethe adapted a medieval version of Reynard the Fox, producing an epic poem, supposedly influenced by the events of the French Revolution. German painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach was commissioned to illustrate the edition of Reineke Fuchs which was originally published in 1846, and his illustrations proved to be quite popular. One plate was suppressed for moral reasons, but it appears in this first American edition.
