Description

Signed by Richard Wright

Richard Wright. Native Son. New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1940. First edition, first printing (stated "First Edition / A-P" on the copyright page). Signed "Sincerely / Richard Wright" on the front free endpaper. Octavo. xii, 359, [1, blank] pages. Title page printed in red and black. Publisher's first issue dark blue cloth stamped and lettered in red, white, and blue on the front cover and spine. Original first issue dust jacket printed in yellow, green, and black. Minor edge wear and some white soiling to the boards. Heavy foxing to the text edges and endpapers, but internally very clean. Jacket spine sunned, with minor rubbing and dust-soiling to the panels. Some chipping (affecting a handful of letters of text) and short tears to the jacket edges. Overall, a very good copy, rarely found signed in the first printing, first issue binding, and first issue dust jacket. A groundbreaking novel that Henry Louis Gates, Jr. refers to as "[t]he single most influential shaping force in black literary history."
