[Illuminated Manuscript]. Illuminated Miniature of The Plague of Flies. [Northern Italy, probably Venice, c. 1540]. Illuminated miniature on vellum being from a manuscript or tabernacle. Approximately 3.5 x 5.75 inches. An incredibly painterly rendering of The Plague of Flies (Exodus 8:12-24), capturing the moment in which hoards of flies invade the homes of the wealthy. The artist captured the fury of the chaotic moment in both the turbulent movements of the people and the anguish on their faces. A fine example of the artistic quality of this time period.
