An Excellent Sea Chart of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and East and West "New Jarsey" from The English Pilot
[The English Pilot]. [John Thornton and
William Fisher]. Virginia, Maryland Pennsylvania, East
and West New Jarsey. [London]: William Tower & Thos. Page,
[n.d., ca. 1743]. Taken from a later edition (probably fourth)
of The English Pilot, one of the most
important (and rarest) navigational works from the
eighteenth-century. Approximately 24 x 33.5 inches. Some
toning, dampstaining, several creases and small tears or chips,
tape repairs to verso. Ink marking on verso, and faint ink marking
at lower margin, lower margin trimmed a bit unevenly, small chip
from lower right corner. Mounted with four pieces of tape onto a
cardboard sheet. Still, a very good copy of this very rare chart.
The English Pilot went through six editions from 1755 until
1794, and five or fewer of copies of each edition are known to be
extant.
