Shave and a Haircut, To Wit

[Satire]. John Richard Desborus Huggins. Hugginiana; or, Huggins' Fantasy, Being a Collection of the Most Esteemed Modern Literary Productions... New York: H. C. Southwick, 1808. First edition, large paper copy. Twelvemo. 288 pages. Engraved frontispiece, seven full-page engravings by Tisdale and Leney as called for, and one additional plate facing page 116; numerous chapter vignettes as well. Bound by Riviere and Sons in full crimson leather with gilt borders to covers and inner dentelles. Top edge gilt. Spine with gilt-stamping and ruling. Morocco label with gilt spine titles. Rubbing to extremities and spine ends. Hinges and joints with repair and some staining. Pages very lightly toned. Some light margin fill and wear to a few illustrations with light fold lines, as they were originally issued as folding plates. Two pages at rear have tipped-in biographical material. Otherwise, a near fine copy of this "scarce and curious" book. Huggins "was a professional hairdresser and wigmaker, and he attracted a wealthy clientele not only by good work but by his witty advertising sallies and by his attacks on Jefferson and particularly on the odorous conduct of the Tammany Society." (Murrell, History of Graphic Humor, page 58). Sabin 33575.
