More Information:

Freed from slavery as a child during the Civil War, Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) became an author, African-American community leader, and educator. He believed that African-Americans living in a post-Civil War era needed education to climb the economic and social ladder in the United States. At the age of twenty-five, Washington began leading the Tuskegee Institute, making it into an education center dedicated to transforming African-Americans into educated, self-sufficient members of American society. In part: "I hesitate to ask another favor. If you can see your way clear to publish the enclosed statement in full or make a partial use of it, I shall be most grateful." (The "enclosed statement" is not included.)
