Description
George M. Dallas Two Autograph Letters Signed, "G. M. Dallas". (1) Written on page one of the four integral pages, 4.75" x 7", December 12, 1858, London. Dallas writes from the Legation of the United States thanking the recipient for sheet music composed for a poem lauding the Atlantic Cable. "I very much fear that the music is too good for the rhymes, or for their abortive subject". (2) Written on page one of the four integral pages, 8" x 9.75", December 2, 1849, n.p.. Dallas refers to "the department of Mr. Dickens already overstocked." Conservation tape on the left of the first letter and docketing on page four of the second letter. Both are fine.More Information:
George Dallas served as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia from 1837 to 1839. He was elected vice president of the United States on the Democratic ticket in 1844 with James K. Polk, serving from March 4, 1845 to March 4, 1849. In 1856, President Franklin Pierce appointed Dallas as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Britain, where he served until 1861.
