Description

Major General Winfield Scott Hancock Engraved Portrait and Letter Signed "Winfield Scott Hancock". Two pages, 4.25" x 7", New York City, January 29, 1876, to General C. D. MacDougall [Clinton Dugald MacDougall], Washington, D.C., with the original transmittal envelope. In this letter General Hancock petitions MacDougall, a member of Congress and former Union general, on behalf of the widow of recently deceased Union general Charles Hale Morgan for a $50.00 per month pension. It reads, in part: "My Dear General, The enclosed petition to Congress for a pension of $50.00 per month for the widow of the late Brevet Brigadier General C. H. Morgan has been forwarded to me with a request that I would have it forwarded to the proper Committee of the House for action. You knew General Morgan very well as Chief of Staff while I commanded the 2nd Corps and none better than you know of the able and valuable services rendered by him during the War. His recent sudden death at San Francisco leaves his widow and six young children with very slender means of support and I do not think Congress could do a more worthy act of this kind than to confer on Mrs. Morgan the pension asked for...". Included is an engraved portrait of Hancock, in uniform, likely excised from a contemporary book. The letter and portrait are in excellent condition.
