Description
[Ulysses S. Grant]. Ely Parker Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 8" x 10", New York, July 23, 1890, to General J. C. Smith of Chicago regarding the realism of a Grant statue in progress, which was to include an Ely Parker likeness on a bronze tablet. In part:"I am greatly pleased that you have taken such prompt measures to have the Grant statue correctly represent history. If yourself and the Committee desire to represent me in the group on the bronze tablet, it should be in uniform. I send you a photo in uniform, which I would suggest that you keep is it has my military record on the back, and give the one you have to the artist to work from. . . . I would that I could now and then drop in on you to enjoy with you the days of Auld Lang Syne."
In his letter, Parker also mentions General Wager Swayne, the upcoming G.A.R. National Encampment, General John Rawlins, General Philip Sheridan, and General John McClernand. Lieutenant Colonel Ely Parker (1828-1895) served as General Grant's adjutant during the Civil War, writing the surrender terms issued to General Lee at Appomattox Courthouse. Parker, a Seneca, was breveted a brigadier general, making him one of only two American Indians to become a general during the Civil War. This letter is toned with folds. Clear and bold text and signature.
