Description

[Prohibition]. Group of Twenty-Six Medicinal Liquor Prescriptions dated 1923 through 1924. Twenty-four are written on partially printed government issued "Treasury Department/U. S. Internal Revenue/Prescription Blank-National Prohibition Act" forms measuring 6.75" x 4.5". The remaining two are handwritten on private prescription sheets measuring 3.5" x 5" and 5.5" x 3.5". All are issued for "Spiritus Frumenti" (whiskey) with the exception of two: one prescribes "Brandy" and the other "Vinum Gallici" (French wine). All are in fine condition.

More Information:

These forms were used to prescribe liquor at a time when alcohol was considered to be as dangerous as opium or any other "hard" drug and was banned by the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment in 1919 and its enforcement beginning in January, 1920. It was repealed thirteen years later (1933) by the Twenty-First Amendment.
