Description
Grenville M. Dodge Autograph Letter Signed "G M Dodge." Four integral pages, 7.75" x 10", St. Louis, Missouri, May 28, 1861, to Samuel Jordan Kirkwood, Governor of Iowa. In the early stages of the war many states struggled to form and equip regiments for service. This letter represents what must have been an all-too-common situation for states - where and how to find uniforms, arms and other military equipage. Dodge was ultimately sent by Governor Kirkwood to secure 6,000 muskets to supply Iowa volunteers and this letter must surely be part of their planning. It reads, in part: "The United States furnishes camp equipage but the delay in obtaining it renders it necessary that the State should furnish it and the U.S. will either refund the money or replace the Camp Equipage...I shall forward you samples from Quartermasters Department and they inform me that most of their Camp Equipage now being furnished volunteers is of little of no account. The Siblie [sic] Tent is considered the best. It accommodates 20 men and costs about $40...I enclose a specimen of cloth of which the uniforms of the Mo. Reg. are made. Cost of Blouse & Pants army pattern made of this is Eight Dollars. It is all wool and I believe would be a good uniform for our state forces." Elsewhere in the letter Dodge informs the Governor that the only way to secure arms is to "be on the spot" in Washington. A fantastic letter illustrating the logistical problems facing states as they raced to raise military units in the early days of the Civil War. The letter remains, bright, legible and with the exception of the usual fold creases, is in fine condition.Auction Info
