Description
Thomas Stone Autograph Endorsement Signed "T: Stone." One page, 9" x 8", n. p., n. d. Thomas Stone is one of the least common of the Declaration of Independence signers. The ink is heavily faded, but still legible and reads, in part: "Saml. Love Esq / of Saml Love / vs / Thom. Reiden / . . . Mr. Gwinn file it." The original paper is fragile with some damage to the lower edge, but has been archivally repaired and strengthened by being skillfully laid on an archival sheet.Thomas Stone (1743-1787) was a delegate to the Continental Congress for Maryland and worked on the committee that drafted the Articles of Confederation. After his wife became ill due to a reaction to smallpox inoculation, he took her back home to Maryland and only rejoined the Congress briefly in 1778 and in 1784, when they met in the city of Annapolis, Stone acting briefly as president of Congress. Following his wife's untimely death in 1787, he became heart broken and died four months later.
