Model 1860 Cavalry Officer's Saber Presented to Capt T.S. Moffatt 12th Illinois Infantry For Heroic Deeds At Corinth Miss Oct. 3rd 1862. 31 ¾" undecorated curved blade marked on ricasso " Horstmann & Son's" and on the reverse "Philadelphia" in deep crisp letters, bright blade showing no wear just minor dark staining , negligible. Perfect leather grip and twisted wire wrap. Brass guard with cast leaf motifs on top and bottom where the branches join the hilt and on the face of the pommel cap. Back strap engraved in fine script "Presented to Capt T.S. Moffatt 12th Ills for heroic deeds in battle Corinth, Oct 3rd 1862". Plain steel scabbard smooth and gray with some areas of dark staining. The grip has been professionally rewrapped, although very difficult to detect. Moffatt enlisted 8/1/1861 as a private, promoted through the ranks to Captain 9/7/1864, discharged 7/19/1865. WIA 10/3/1862 at Corinth MS and again at Altoona GA 10/5/1864. The 12th Illinois was heavily engaged though out the war losing a total of 260 men. Included is a file of extensive research of Capt Moffatt and the 12th Illinois. A fine sword in excellent condition with an interesting history.
