Model 1860 Cavalry Officer's Sword Inscribed to 1st Sergeant John W. Tuthill Co F 2nd Illinois Cavalry. 31 ¼" slightly curved blade smooth and gray with some dark staining, marked on the ricasso Horstmann & Sons / Philadelphia with knights head on the reverse. Grip with lightly worn leather and perfect twisted wire wrap. Brass guard with cast leaf motifs on top and bottom where the branches join the hilt and on the face of the pommel cap. Back strap hand inscribed " J. W. Tuthill 1st Sergt Co F 2nd Ill Cav ". Steel scabbard dark with areas of light surface rust and a few shallow dents near the drag. The grip has been professionally rewrapped, although very difficult to detect. John Tuthill enlisted 7/10/1861 at Monticello Illinois promoted to Sergeant 8/24/1864 and 1st Sergeant 1/10/1865. The 2nd Illinois Cavalry served in the deep south for most of the war seeing heavy action at Vicksburg, later near New Iberia LA Companies H and F attacked 100 Texas rangers capturing 70 without losses. Included is an extensive file concerning the histories of Sergt Tuthill and the 2nd Illinois Cavalry. A nice untouched sword with an interesting history.
