Description
Uniform Group Belonging to Captain Aaron J. Hallenbeck of the 14th New York Heavy Artillery, including: a fine wool high-crown kepi with an gilt embroidered badge from the 14th New York Heavy Artillery and artillery buttons on the chinstrap, slight mothing and tattering to the red silk lining, else, very fine; a very impressive white velvet and linen cream-colored vest with nine artillery buttons, the adjusting strap in the back has the ink inscription, "A. Hallenbeck"; and, a black felt slouch hat with an acorn hatband and a Grand Army of the Republic badge from the Canby Post #17 of Gloversville, New York, the sweatband is marked "A. Hallenbeck".Aaron J. Hallenbeck initially enlisted in St. Louis, Missouri and was mustered into federal service in January 1855, serving in several regiments until 1860. Hallenbeck re-enlisted in Johnstown, New York, January 4, 1864 and was mustered into Company "D" of the 14th New York Heavy Artillery. He participated in the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North and South Anna River, Pegram's Farm, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Fort Stevens, Monocracy, and Appomattox. According to G.A.R. records, Hallenbeck was promoted from private to Lieutenant, and then to Captain. He was wounded at the Wilderness, May 7, 1864.
