Description

Charles Dickens: Beautiful Signed Letter Closing and a Handsome 1897 Two Volume Edition of Martin Chuzzlewit. Measuring 4.5" x 1.75", the letter closing reads "always my Dear Henry affectionate loves Charles Dickens." Below and to the left of Dickens' signature, he has written the full name of the Henry referred to in the closing. Here, we learn that Dickens has written to "Henry Austin Esquire", his brother-in-law and close friend. An architect and artist, Austin married Dickens' younger sister Letitia in 1837. His death in 1861 was a great blow to both Letitia and Charles. Dickens' signature here is bold and includes the typical flourish of lines below his name. A wonderful Dickens signature with a close family association.
Also offered here is The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (London and New York: Chapman & Hall, Ld. and Charles Scribner's Sons, 1897), Gadshill Issue, two volumes, 1,014 total pages, modern red half leather binding with five leather spine bands and gilt lettering, binding by Whitman Bennett, New York, 8vo (6" x 8"), each volume individually housed in a custom red cloth slipcase. Deckled fore-edges. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Profusely illustrated with the original Phiz (Halbot K. Browne) etchings. Both volumes are in very good condition, with minor edge wear and light toning to the text edges. A beautiful set of the novel G.K. Chesterton referred to as populated by "grotesque figures of the most gorgeous kind" and full of "scenes that are farcical even by the standard of the farcical license of Dickens."
