Description

Jules Verne. From the Earth to the Moon Direct in 97 Hours 20 Minutes: And a Trip Round It. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1873. First combined edition in English. Octavo. viii, 323 pages. Illustrated with dozens of black and white plates. Frontispiece. Green pictorial cloth, decorated in black and gold, over beveled boards. All edges gilt. Hinges weak. Corners bumped, extremities rubbed. Missing front free endpaper. Previous owners name in ink on front pastedown. Very good. The first novel, De la Terre a la Lune, was earlier translated into English and published by the Newark Printing and Publishing Co. (1869), with only one surviving copy recorded. This, the highly desirable Sampson Low edition, incorporates both De la Terre a la Lune (1865) and Autour de la Lune (1870). The translators, Louis Mercier and Eleanor E. King, also translated Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Myers, 26. From the Jerry Weist Collection.
