Description

Abraham Lincoln: Huge 1860 Republican Candidate for President Poster. This impressive 1860 poster of a young, beardless Abe measures 21.5" x 28". It is one of the most sought-after of Lincoln campaign prints and posters among sophisticated collectors. Heritage offered another example, also with some imperfections in our June 2006 Americana auction, where it sold for $7,170 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,500 to $2,000. Below the striking charcoal sketch image of Lincoln is inscribed "Yours Truly, A. Lincoln." Below that in small print reads "Entered According to Act of Congress in the Year 1860 by W. Schaus in the Clerks Office of the District Court of Mass." At the lower left corner is printed "Painted by Hicks" and at lower right corner "Lith by L. Grozelier, Boston." At the bottom in bold, the poster reads "Hon. Abraham Lincoln / Republican Candidate for the Presidency 1860."

Despite some imperfections, this poster retains a very presentable overall display appearance. On the left edge, there are two repaired tears. One to the left of his shoulder at 1 ¾" and the second 5" up from the bottom of 1 ½". Two tears are evident at the top. The first is "V"-shaped 6" in on the top left of the poster. The second is a diagonal tear running from the top edge down to his right eyebrow. The poster is quite stable, as it has already been professionally backed by linen. While it is not mint, defects are to be expected on a 147-year-old poster. And if one is going to make allowances for condition, there is no more appropriate item than a great Lincoln campaign poster.
