Description

Apollo 7 In-Flight Exerciser used by the astronauts on the first manned Apollo mission, October 11-22, 1968, accompanied by its 10" high by 4" diameter storage bag. Presented to Joe Garino by the mission's Command Module pilot, Donn Eisele. This "Exer-Genie" unit combined isometric and isotonic exercise to attain and maintain strength, endurance and flexibility. With a photocopy of a one page, 8" x 10.5", March 10, 1969, typed letter from the three Apollo 7 crew members, Eisele, Wally Schirra, and Walt Cunningham, to Joe Garino, saying, in part, that their "personal awareness of 'the Garino touch' came into clearest focus during the Apollo 7 mission when we set about to use the Exergenie you wisely suggested we take with us...we used it almost constantly as flight activities would permit..." Also included in this lot are two newspaper clippings detailing Garino's position and duties at NASA, as well as two photocopies of documents on the same subject. From the collection of renowned former physical trainer of the astronauts Joe Garino. This lot is accompanied by a signed certificate of authentication from Garino verifying its provenance.
