Description

Black pot signed "Marie and Julian" by potter Maria Montoya Martinez. Maria and her husband Julian Martinez were active potters in the traditional polychrome style of San Ildefonso before the famous matte black-on-black style was worked out by Julian in about 1919. They continued to work in the polychrome style until about 1926. The black-on-black style, which has made the Martinez family famous, has also helped to inspire pottery making in the Rio Grande Pueblo area. The black-on-black style was so successful that polychrome was almost obsolete until the revival by Popovi Da in 1956 or 57. Maria and Julian were encouraged to sign their pieces by a trader early in their career. Size 4" x 2" Courtesy of Watson Arnold, Fort Worth. The high bid placed by via mail, fax, the Internet or telephone will be entered as the opening bid for the lot during the live portion of the silent auction.
