Description

Johnson, Andrew. Autograph note signed, with an additional signature as Vice President. Johnson, Andrew. Autograph note signed ("Andrew Johnson") with an additional signature as Vice President, 2 in. x 4.5 in. (51 x 114 mm.), undated. Johnson responds to a request for President Lincoln's autograph. He writes in pencil, "I regret that I cannot furnish you with the autograph of President Lincoln, Andrew Johnson". Additionally signed in bold ink on the verso "Andrew Johnson, Greenville, Tenn." Fine condition. Actual hand-signed signatures by Johnson are rare, as most of his signatures were stamped with a steel-engraved facsimile signature, which became necessary after he sustained an injury to his right arm in a Georgia railroad accident in 1857. The arm gave him trouble throughout his Presidency and for the rest of his life.
