Description

Fine Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword, Circa 1840. 39½" overall with 33¼" double edge blade that is 1 7/16" wide at the rudimentary ricasso with an 8½" long deep, narrow, central fuller. Blade generally smooth with nice dark patina, a number of edge nicks on the right side that could be smoothed out, the very tip of the blade just slightly bent. Elaborate, heavy, full basket brass hilt. Mushroom shaped pommel cap with decoratively cut cannelures. The capstan nut is threaded allowing the sword to be dismantled. Hilt retains some original gilt, the balance a nice mellow patina, with deep dark untouched patina inside. Both quillon side outboard branches are cracked at the top, no loss and easily repaired. Sharkskin grip, with triple brass wire wrap, perfect, with nice smooth wear patina. A most impressive early 19th century Scottish basket hilt.
