Frederick Edwin Smith (1872-1930), 1st Earl of Birkenhead, was a British Conservative statesman, attorney, and close friend of Sir Winston Churchill. Smith wrote The World in 2030 during the final year of his life. He begins his preface, "It is the purpose of the Essays which follow to attempt a series of speculative predictions dealing with the possible development of the world during the next hundred years." Separate chapters deal with such subjects as war, industry, everyday life, amenities, the world polity, and women. From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.
