Description

[Featured Lot]. [Travels and Voyages]. W. R. Wilde. Narrative of a Voyage to Madeira, Teneriffe and Along the Shores of the Mediterranean, including a Visit to Algiers, Egypt, Palestine, Tyre, Rhodes, Telmessus, Cyprus, and Greece. Dublin: William Curry, Jun. and Company. 1840. First edition. One work in two octavo volumes. Two engraved frontispiece plates, two maps (one of which, "Plan of Jerusalem", has colored highlights), two facing plates of skulls, and several in-text illustrations. Four page advertisement bound in the front of the first volume. Bound in half green morocco over marbled paper covered boards, five raised spine bands with gilt rules and titles in compartments, patterned endpapers, and reading ribbons. Small bookstore label on first front pastedown. Bindings lightly rubbed, small corner bumps, both spine heads frayed with small chips. Pencil underscore of author's last name on the first title page, few other annotations. Image off-set from first frontispiece onto title page, second frontispiece with reinforcement along its gutter. Occasional light scattered foxing and thumbsoiling. Minor edge wear and corner bends. Very good.

Interesting to note that the author of this work, William Wilde, was the father of the renowned author Oscar Wilde.
