Engraved title page and frontispiece used in the first volume and the printed title page used in the second. Engraved plates by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne), including the "dark plate" facing page 547, its title "On the Dark Road" is trimmed. Half green morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and elaborate gilt decorations on the spine, with five raised bands. Bindings rubbed and chipped, corner and edge bumps. Ink gift inscription on front pastedown of the first volume, both with bookstore labels on front free endpapers. Moderate foxing (heavier on plates and adjacent pages), few pages loosely laid in, old binding stab holes near gutter, occasional smudging or soiling. Very good.
