Description

[Fore-edge Painting]. Lord Byron. Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, A Romaunt: And Other Poems. [Cantos I & II]. London: T. Davison for John Murray, 1812. Third edition. [together with:] Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Canto the Third. London: For John Murray, 1816. First edition. [bound with:] Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Canto the Fourth. London: John Murray, 1818. First edition.

Two octavo volumes. Both volumes with scenic fore-edge paintings. Three title pages. First volume with an engraved plate and a fold-out facsimile Greek letter. Second volume's Fourth Canto with one engraved plate. Armorial bookplate on both pastedowns and ink gift inscriptions on front blanks. Both bound in full red straight grain morocco (the second volume darker than the first), with decorative gilt borders and corner designs, five raised spine bands with gilt titles and devices in compartments, all edges gilt, gilt on board edge corners, and gilt inner dentelles.

Bindings rubbed and scuffed, second volume front board corner at foot dented with joint cracked. Chalk residue on front free endpaper of second volume. Small hole in first title page not affecting text, previous owner's holograph ink name on the title page of Canto III. Some moderate foxing and occasional soiling. Very good.

More Information:

Holograph pencil note in the second volume identifies the fore-edge painting as depicting "Old Dulwich", where Byron was a student at Dr. Glennie's Academy, previously known as the Green Man Tavern.
