Description

[Civil War]. Alexander Gardner. Original Albumen Civil War Photograph titled "Fortifications on Heights of Centreville, Virginia" from his classic 1865 book, Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War. March, 1862. After the battle of Bull Run, the Confederates erected massive earthworks stretching from Manassas to the ridge at Centreville. Gardner, a colleague of Mathew Brady, was born in Scotland and became an expert in the wet collodion process. This superb photographic print was made from a negative by Bernard & Gibson. Measures 9" x 7", mounted to 18" x 13". There is some insignificant damage to the outside mounting border that does nothing to detract from the image.
