Description
Nathan Bedford Forrest United Sons of Confederate Veterans Letter Opener, with a cream colored molded celluloid bust of General Forrest, 10" long. The blade is stamped in gold letters "N. B. Forrest Camp No. 215/ U. S. C. V./ Confederate Reunion, Memphis, 1909". It is also marked on the back, "Made in Germany".On June 28, 1900, a group of over 100 sons and grandsons of Confederate veterans met in Memphis to organize a local chapter, or "camp" of the United Sons of Confederate Veterans, later known as the Sons of Confederate Veterans (S.C.V.). Following active debate, the camp was named for Confederate cavalry general Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877), a Memphian. On March 27, 1901, a charter was issued, thus making N.B. Forrest Camp 215 the first U.S.C.V. camp in Memphis.
