Description

[Mary Elizabeth Braddon]. Gerard. Or, the World, the Flesh, and the Devil. London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1891. First edition. Presentation copy, signed by the author to the title page and inscribed, presumably to Joseph Hatton (journalist and novelist), to the front free endpaper verso, "To the Author / of the Queen of Bohemia / with an old friend's / kindest regards. / Richmond / August. 6. 92." Three volumes. Octavo. [iv], 298; [iv], 282; [iv], 237 pages. Uniformly bound in publisher's forest green cloth double ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Corners just bumped, minor edgewear, head and foot of spine pushed and somewhat worn, Volumes I and II recased with some bubbling to spines, Volume II joints just starting, a few minor spots of soiling. Yellow endpapers; hinges starting, endpapers somewhat rubbed. Internally generally clean and tight; Volume I somewhat roughly opened, Volumes II and III chiefly unopened, top edges darkened, text block toned along margins and edges, moderate text block edgewear, minor intermittent soiling. Housed in custom green cloth slipcase backed in green morocco, spine stamped in gilt, each volume in a green cloth chemise with the book label of Florence and Edward Kaye; Volume I chemise with one flap detached but present, slipcase with moderate edgewear with some losses. Very good or better.

A Faustian tale from the "foremost English sensation novelist" (Bleiler). Though she wrote prolifically, Braddon often published anonymously or under a pseudonym and was by all accounts rather private. Her presentation inscription here was presumably intended for Joseph Hatton, an English writer and journalist who wrote The Queen of Bohemia (Chapman and Hall, 1877) and published one of the very few interviews Braddon ever gave about her life ("Miss Braddon at Home," London Society, 1888).

Bleiler, Supernatural, 267; Sadleir, 288; Summers, page 21; Wolff, 646. From the Gary Munson Collection
