Description

One of the Earliest Printed Maps of Texas from the Republic Era

J. H. Young. A New Map of Texas, With The Contiguous American & Mexican States. Philadelphia: Published by S. Augustus Mitchell, 1837.

Hand-colored folding pocket map, 15 x 12 3/4 inches, on thin banknote style paper, within an ornamental border, with three text block insets, entitled: "Remarks on Texas" "Rivers of Texas," and "Land Grants." Folding into the publisher's 12mo embossed leather covers, gilt-lettered on cover: "Mitchell's Map of Texas." Housed in a modern quarter morocco slipcase.

This is the third issue of this map, distinguished by the date 1837 in the imprint. The map originally appeared in 1835 with the same title and is known to have been published through 1845. All printings of the map are from the same copper plate, to which changes were made with each successive issue. As with all Texas maps of the time, it is based to a certain extent on Austin's map, which originally appeared at Philadelphia in 1830. This map freely partakes of some of the information contained in subsequent maps issued thereafter. It shares certain features, for example, with the map published in Mary Austin Holley's Texas (1833) and that published in the anonymous Visit to Texas (1834).

With Anglo emigration to Texas again allowed, potential settlers were eager for knowledge about the area and practical advice on how to actually emigrate to Texas. The insets praise the fertility of the soil and the prospects of the stock raiser, assure prospective settlers and businessmen of the navigability of Texas rivers and of the fertility of their bottomlands, and offer information on acquiring lands in Texas. Scattered about on the face of the map are other enticements, such as "Droves of Wild Cattle & Horses," "Salt Springs," and "Immense Level Prairies."

Young (b. 1793), a Scot, was an engraver active in Philadelphia, 1817-1866, where he worked for various firms. He engraved many maps during his years with Mitchell and has been compared favorably to John Arrowsmith.

Condition: Map with some light overall toning, some minor discoloration and small separations at folds. Front cover is slightly warped with the hinge cracked. Pencil notations made at an earlier time on the front pastedown.
