Description
Apollo 11 Command Module Flown Ablative Plug. Fabricated from resin, this 1/2" around x 5/8" long plug "helped protect the spacecraft from the searing heat of re-entry. These plugs were threaded into holes to cover the bolts that were used to secure various access panels around the exterior of the spacecraft." (from the SpaceCoast Cover Service COA included). After the successful landing and recovery of the CM Columbia, several of these plugs were removed by technicians with access to the spacecraft and kept as souvenirs of this historic flight. This particular one was removed by a worker from the Rockwell Space Division assigned to Apollo 11's post landing and safety recovery team. The certificate has a close-up photo of the spacecraft showing a number of these plugs in place.Auction Info
